Your First Time on a Golf Simulator: What to Expect (and What Not to Wear)

So you've been talked into golf simulators. Maybe it's a birthday, maybe it's a work thing, maybe your mate "used to play off 12" and won't stop mentioning it. Either way, here's everything you need to know before your first session, so you can walk in looking like you've done this before.

Clubhouse Maroochydore: 7 golf simulators, 6 interactive darts bays, food and drinks. Book a bay →

How does a golf simulator actually work?

You hit a real ball with a real club into a big screen. Clever tech measures the ball the instant it leaves the club, including speed, launch angle and spin, and shows exactly where it would have gone on a real course.

Yes, that includes the water hazard. The simulator is very honest. Too honest, some would say.

At Clubhouse, we've got 7 simulator bays: 6 ProTee bays and 1 Trackman bay.

What should I wear?

Whatever you'd wear to the pub, as long as you can swing your arms. Normal clothes and clean sneakers are perfect. Golf shoes, polo shirts and visors are optional. Matching outfits with your mates are encouraged.

Do I need my own clubs?

Nope. Clubs are provided, including left-handed, right-handed, ladies and kids sets. If you've got your own and want to bring them, go for it.

I've never played golf. Am I going to embarrass myself?

A little, probably. But so is everyone else, and that's half the fun. Games like closest to the pin and long drive are quick, easy and surprisingly competitive. Our staff will show you how everything works, and you can make the settings more forgiving if your group is new.

How long should I book?

  • 1 hour: 1 or 2 people practising or playing a few holes
  • 2 hours: groups of 3 to 6 playing a round or a mix of games
  • More: for a full 18 holes with a group, or just play 9 and spend the rest at the bar

Can I eat and drink while I play?

Absolutely. We've got a sports bar with beer, wine and cocktails, plus burgers, pizzas and share plates served to your bay. Simulator golf is the only form of golf where you never have to walk to the next hole.

Is it actually good for practice?

Yes. Every shot is measured, so it's one of the best ways to learn your real carry distances and see your true ball flight in any weather. Our members get early-morning access for exactly that.

First-timer tips

  1. Book ahead, especially Friday and Saturday nights.
  2. Arrive 10 minutes early so we can set up your bay.
  3. Warm up on the practice range before you start keeping score.
  4. Start with a game, not a full round, if your group is new.
